Musical Director

Morven Bell

Musical Director of EUWB and Dunedin Wind Band.

Morven grew up in Edinburgh. She studied oboe and cor anglais at the RSAMD in Glasgow and  enjoyed a freelance career that involved a variety of work, including BBCSSO, RSNO and  freelance orchestras and theatre work, including the “Fiddler on the Roof” National Tour. She is particularly proud to have played with HM Royal Marines (Scotland) band on 2 occasions. She now plays for a variety of local gigs and is the Principal Oboe of Scottish Sinfonia.

She teaches oboe and bassoon at George Heriot’s School, The Edinburgh Academy, Merchiston Castle School, Clifton Hall and Strathallan, as well as private pupils of all ages.

In 1993, she became conductor of the Edinburgh University Wind Band, thinking it would be a short term appointment. She is very proud of EUWB and has just started her 30th year as Musical Director, a job she is still thoroughly enjoying! The band perform 2 concerts a year in Edinburgh and have an annual tour to Europe.

Morven has worked with various community and school wind bands over the years and particularly enjoyed helping Dunedin Wind Band, No Strings Attached and Edinburgh Concert Band. In 2020, when Dunedin Wind Band were looking for a new Musical Director, she jumped at the chance. Taking on a band during lockdown was a challenge but after a period of Zoom rehearsals, she got the band back together in person. The Christmas concert was a success, with Morven conducting her first concert in her new role after 18 months of being in the job!
